What is it with the letter ‘F’?

What is it with the letter ‘F’?

fThe three F’s… ‘FAST’… ‘Fall’… and ‘Fail’. Ever noticed that these words begin with the letter “F”? For the past two years I have been wondering whether the Fall semester is cursed. How is it that whenever the new semester starts in August, some sort of construction is always taking place? Where is all the money coming from? It’s actually coming from a source that none of us would have ever thought possible…. US (here US doesn’t stand for the United States of America it’s you, me and everyone else). I know that it’s a wild theory, but who knows? It could be true!

I came to this university in the Fall of 2oo7. Back then there was no café, no new block and the highway was also two feet below its current level. E&M block was known as J-block back then. I remember seniors pointing to the bricks of J-block and saying ‘iss brick pay mera naam likha hua hai’. I then discovered that the faculty had given so many F’s the previous Fall semester that the students began to wonder whether the entire J-block had been constructed from their money. I became very cautious. I didn’t know about the 3 F’s back then. My own name starts with an “F”! Soon enough the construction of the café began. Whenever I would pass the highway, I would hear people passing comments. ‘Lo jee, naya café ban raha hai… iss semester baray F anay hain’.Semester soon came to an end and all the rumours turned out to be true. There were so many F’s given in our circuit analysis course, it was hard to find in the list, the people who had passed the course! Except for the ‘theetas’ of course! And to make matters worse, even our professor left the university so that no one would be able to question him.

Cafe

Spring 2oo8- There was a dreadful smell in the air. The smell of conspiracy: conspiracy of the faculty and the administration against the students. What’s up for construction this time? Gradually I came up with the ‘Theory of the 3 F’s’. My friends thought that it was pretty far-fetched but I was determined to prove them wrong.

Fall 2oo8- Classes began in August. I looked around the campus for any signs of construction. There were none. How can this be? My theory cannot be wrong! Three months went by… still nothing happened. The finals… all of a sudden the main gate of the university closed down. The highway was torn apart. A new car park next to the football ground. The basketball and tennis courts were also going to be renovated. I couldn’t believe it. If my theory was correct, I was going to witness another bad semester. And sure enough, a record number of F’s were given in the course of ‘Data structures’.

Next semester- My friends finally accept my theory. We decided to raise our voice and let the world know what was going on. But first, we needed to prove our theory by collecting solid evidence. We were able to find some statisticalevidence. We gathered the grade sheets from the previous Fall and Spring semesters and found out that the number of F’s given in Fall were indeed more. If any construction took place the next Fall semester, we would be absolutely sure that our theory was correct. At the end of the semester, we were quite relaxed as Spring semester usually turned out better than Fall. We planned to play a game of football in the ground then suddenly the horror fell upon us. Bulldozers, tractors, cranes, construction material everywhere! They were going to level the sports office, the table tennis court and the badminton court!  We were awed! They were making a new block which would join the two existing blocks together.

'F' Block

The new block is still under construction. And what semester is this? FALL 2oo9!!! My theory proven once again! And I would suggest they name it the F-Block. In these 2 years at FAST this is by far the biggest construction job that I’ve witnessed; and according to my theory, bigger the construction, greater the number of F’s. So beware my fellow FASTians! You’re in for a bad bad semester.
